ROAM’s mission is to provide children with access to the natural environment to experience unstructured and unsupervised play.

We believe that the desire to explore and play freely outdoors is a natural and positive human instinct, and critical to children’s development.

In a generation, such play has almost disappeared for children under 11 in the UK. For centuries, it was a normal part of childhood, helping to form life skills including self-reliance, independence and resilience . Now this type of freedom is very unusual.

We believe that we can remove the barriers that prevent such play happening. We are putting in place small interventions that enable parents to feel comfortable about their children playing in this way.

ROAM is currently being piloted with sessions in south Birmingham. Our aspiration is to develop a model that other communities can adopt.  Follow us on Twitter @roam_kids for updates or to get in touch.
